While you may think that a roller can be use to do anything and that they are all the same... I want to stop that train of thought. There is not a one for all of the roller world. Lingo here, Skin refers to just the fabric roller that you apply to the frame. The frame spins and has a handle.

Why Is There Not A One For All

There are different textures on walls. You need to match your roller nap to the texture on your wall.

You most likely have seen a verity of roller skins at all hard ware stores. We will stare with the rollers that give you the smoothest textures and move our way to the rollers that will give you the deepest textures.

Foam rollers are fantastic for the smoothest of surfaces. They will allow you to have the shallowest smoothest looking water on the beach. Seriously. Use a foam roller for anything that looks like a glassy lake. At first your roller will seem dry but once it becomes saturated with paint you will be able to smooth out the paint.

Go over the surface a couple times to get the smoothest look. If you notice bubbles then wait for your paint to cure a bit and LIGHTLY roll over the bubbles with your dryish roller. Just let the roller drop down the wall to pop any bubbles you might see.

You will see Mohair or Velour roller skins. Categorize these as a 3/16" skin. These give a smooth surface but you need to consistently roll in one direction or your finish will turn out streaky. They do leave a nice smooth finish but you need to know that every stroke will need to be just like the last so you don't get a flashing effect.

Lets See What We Need To Get Through The Choppier Waters

Notice the sizes 3/16", 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 3/4", 1", 1 1/4"' 1 1/2". When ypuir wall is flat, with no texture, you will want verry little nap (fabric) on your roller. Go ahead and use a 1/4 inch nap roller. This will allow for the best controll and you will not find yourself with leads of paint running down your wall.

If your walls have an orange peele texture then pick up a 3/8 inch nap roller. You will find that this nap allows for your roller to cover small patches while leaving a little stipple to hide the patch. This is also handy when you need to touch up a wall. Using to thick a nap will leave you with uneven textures. This thickness is the most versatile for all projects.

Slightly heavier textures like Skip Trowel, my personal favorite, and Knock Down textures need a little heavier nap. 1/2" nap will get into all the coves on these textures while leaving a smooth texture on the glassier spots of the wall.

Sand swirl is found in most victorian homes where plaster has been used. Adding sand to your paint and using a heavier nap roller (3/4) will help you match this texture.

Stomp brush, crows feet, rose bud, slap brush and all comb textures will need a heavier nap yet. Grab a 3/4" to a 1" nap skin to allow for good coverage. These are truly choppier Watters and not only will you need more paint your will also need the heavier skin. Your roller will also weigh more because y=it will be heavier saturated with paint.

Popcorn ceilings.. yes, people still have popcorn ceilings and if you would rather keep them instead of cleaning them off then you will need to use the heaviest nap skins out there. You are going to go through the most paint that you ever thought possible. Grab that !1/4" ro the 11/2". They will both do well. You are going to make the most out of your time with the thickest nap but you are going to get a work out and will likely experience sore muscles.

Go ahead, #hashtag away.

Sometimes You Need The Right Size And Thickness

As you should know by now, when it comes to painting, size matters.

There are not just the little "Weenie" rollers. AKA mini rollers that differ in size from 3" - 6". There are also your typical paint rollers. the basic size for this is 4"- 16".
